The 5-Step Checklist
Step 1: Verify Key Specs Against the PTR (Product Technical Requirement)
I know this sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how often the wrong component variant shows up. We had a shipment where the drill rig came with standard-grade hydraulic hoses instead of the high-pressure variant specified in the PTR. The vendor initially said they were 'functionally identical.' They weren't. The high-pressure hoses are rated for 6,000 psi vs. 4,500 psi for standard. On a surface rig running at 5,500 psi, that's a failure waiting to happen.
Check the serial numbers against the PTR. For an Epiroc rig like a SmartROC D65 or a FlexiROC D65, confirm the model number includes the correct suffix—like EC (Electronic Control) vs. standard. The EC variant has a different control system and wiring harness. If you get a standard model but ordered EC, you're looking at a retrofit that's not trivial. Step 2: Check the Automation Modules (Physical Installation)
This is where digital efficiency (the kind I'm a fan of) can get undermined by sloppy installation. Many new Epiroc rigs come with Mobilaris Companion WiFi and Surface Manager modules pre-installed. But I've seen cases where the antennas were mounted on the same bracket as the GPS receiver—causing interference.
Check the physical mounting of any automation hardware. The Mobilaris unit should be in a lockable box, accessible but not exposed to falling debris. Cables should be routed away from moving parts. And—this one's funny—I once found the WiFi antenna pointing straight up inside the cab. Signal range dropped from 300m to 50m. Orientation matters.
Also: verify the software version matches the hardware revision. Some early 2024 shipments had Mobilaris software v2.3 on hardware that required v3.0. The system powered up but didn't register with the network. It took us four hours on the phone to diagnose. Now we check this before acceptance.
Step 3: Inspect the Drill String and Consumables Management
Most buyers focus on the rig itself and completely miss the consumables. But a drill rig with 20% worn drill bits out of the box is a red flag. I'm not saying it's a deal-breaker, but you need to know what you're getting. Ask for the wear report on any included drill string components. Epiroc's COP (Percussion Drilling) rods have a limited life in terms of impact cycles. If the supplier can't provide cycle counts on used components, negotiate a discount.
For new components, measure the outer diameter of the drill rods. A rod that's 0.1mm undersized can cause vibration and premature wear on the chuck. Industry standard tolerance is ±0.05mm on rod diameter for premium drilling (Source: ANSI/ASME B89.3.1).
Check the drill bit gauge. I once rejected a set of 127mm bits that were all at 126.2mm—that's 0.8mm undersized. On a 50,000-unit annual drill pattern, that means you're losing about 2% of hole diameter. Doesn't sound like much until you calculate the extra explosives cost.
Step 4: Verify the Hole Straightness Specifications
This is the step most people ignore. Everyone asks about penetration rate. The question they should ask is: what's the guaranteed hole straightness at 20m depth?
Surface drill rigs like the FlexiROC series can achieve deviation of 1-2% of depth under controlled conditions. But I've seen rigs that claimed <1% deviation out of the box but delivered 3.5% on the first test. The issue was a worn feed beam guide that wasn't visible to the naked eye. We only caught it because we ran an inclinometer test.
Ask for the straightness acceptance criteria in writing. If the supplier says 'industry standard,' ask which standard. ISO 17025 calibration for inclinometers or ANSI/ASME B89.3.1 laser alignment are defensible benchmarks. If they can't provide a reference, that's a flag.
Practical test: run a 10m hole and measure deviation with a camera or inclinometer tool. It takes 20 minutes and saves you months of problems.
Step 5: Run a Full Operational Test Under Load
I used to think a test under no load was enough. Then I saw a feed motor seize under full load on day three because the hydraulic return line had a kink that only showed up at pressure. So I changed my approach.
Create a test plan that includes:
- 15 minutes of drilling at recommended rotation and feed force
- 5 minutes at maximum hydraulic pressure (if safe)
- Verify temperature rise in hydraulic fluid (expect 5-15°C above ambient; if it hits 30°C+ under normal conditions, there's a restriction)
- Check the automation module response—trigger a 'steer to target' command and see if the rig responds within 2 seconds (Epiroc's spec for Mobilaris-controlled rigs)
After the test, inspect the hydraulic oil for color change—it should still be clear. If it's milky or dark, there's contamination or overheating.
Common Oversights and Final Notes
Don't forget the operator manual. I know it sounds like a minor thing, but I've seen rigs delivered without the updated manual for the specific controller version. The operator interface on a 2024 model may have different menus than a 2023 model. If the manual doesn't match, request an updated PDF before signing off.
Document everything with both measurements and photos. A note saying 'drill bit undersized' is weaker than a photo of the gauge reading next to the spec sheet. I've rejected about 12% of first deliveries in 2024 due to spec deviations—and every time, the documentation was what made the vendor take it seriously.
Prices for surface drill rigs vary wildly based on configuration—anywhere from $500k to $1.5M for a tier 1 supplier like Epiroc (based on dealer quotes from Q4 2024; verify current pricing). A systematic inspection is cheap insurance on that kind of investment.
