I assumed Epiroc's deep automation was an on/off switch. It's not. It's a ladder of capabilities. Level one is remote monitoring. Level two is semi-autonomous drilling (the operator starts the cycle, the machine executes). Level three is full autonomous operation—and that requires infrastructure changes, additional sensors, and often a site redesign.
The mistake I made: recommending automation to the operations manager without clarifying which level we were actually buying. He expected Level 3; we quoted Level 1. That conversation was not pleasant.
Lesson: Ask for the specific automation tier in writing. Get the operator requirements. Then compare.

Epiroc is a Swedish company (headquarters in Stockholm). Sweden has transparent corporate governance and progressive taxation. I'm not saying their contracts copy the tax code. The base price looked competitive. Then I discovered the contract had a quarterly price adjustment tied to the CPI index plus a fixed percentage. It was spelled out in plain language—clause 7.4, page 14. I just hadn't read it. Over 18 months, the effective rate went up 11%.

3. What's a 'drift'—and why does it matter for my ventilation planning?
I'm in open pit, not underground. So when a ventilation engineer asked about "drift" during a meeting, I nodded and said I'd check. Found out later I looked completely unprepared.
In mining terminology, a drift is a horizontal tunnel excavated in underground mining. It's not the same as a shaft (vertical) or a raise (vertical, going up). Ventilation systems for drifts require different air volume calculations than shafts because the cross-section shape and friction factor differ.
Why this matters for Epiroc: they manufacture ventilation fans and ducting systems for underground operations. If you're speccing a Ventilo system, knowing whether it's for a drift or a shaft determines the fan pressure requirement. I didn't know that. The Epiroc engineer assumed I did. We ended up with the wrong fan spec for an underground project.

The question: "Is this system designed for drift, shaft, or open air?" You feel smarter asking it—and you avoid the swap cost.
4. Is the Epiroc Allen, Texas facility a service center or a parts hub?
Epiroc has a facility in Allen, Texas (just north of Dallas). When I needed a hydraulic hammer part urgently, I assumed Allen could both service the unit and stock the part. That was partially correct.
The Allen facility is primarily a distribution center and training facility for surface drilling equipment. It has some service capability, but it's not a full rebuild shop for, say, a massive HB 10000 hydraulic hammer. For major overhauls, parts often ship from a different regional center or from Sweden.
My initial assumption cost me a 48-hour misdirect. The part went to Allen, then got re-routed to a service partner in Oklahoma. The job was late.
Practical advice: Before you order a critical spare, confirm the warehouse location and the center's service scope. "Can this facility do the work?" is a yes/no question. Get the answer in writing.
5. Is Epiroc utdelning 2024 relevant to my equipment planning?
This question is for the finance people, not the equipment operators—but it affects procurement.
Utdelning is Swedish for "dividend." When Epiroc announces its annual dividend (which they did in early 2024), it signals corporate financial health and investment priorities. For publicly traded suppliers, the dividend policy tells you how much cash they're retaining for R&D versus paying out to shareholders.
In 2024, Epiroc's dividend announcement indicated strong cash generation. For buyers, that means the company has resources to invest in parts inventory and technical support. It also means they're less likely to slash prices to generate cash—so don't expect panic discounts.
I used to ignore this. Now I check the investor relations page before entering a major negotiation. It sets expectations.
6. Is the Epiroc rock breaker the same as the 'HB' series?
I once ordered "an Epiroc rock breaker" for a demolition job. Generic specification. The supplier shipped an HB 3100. That's a hydraulic breaker, yes. But the application required a specific impact energy class (the HB 3100 delivers about 3,000 joules). The job needed 5,000 joules.
The Epiroc product line uses the "HB" prefix for its hydraulic breaker range. There's also the "SB" series (smaller breakers for light demolition). If you just say "rock breaker," you might get the wrong class.
Lesson: Always specify the material density and desired production rate per hour, not just the model number. The distributor can then match the energy class. My mistake was skipping the application parameters and jumping straight to a part number.
7. Are Mobilaris solutions standard or optional?
When I saw "Mobilaris" on an Epiroc brochure, I assumed it was a standard integration on newer drill rigs. It's not. Mobilaris Mining Intelligence is a suite of digital solutions (real-time positioning, traffic control, production monitoring) that can be added to existing or new equipment. But it's an optional upgrade, not a default feature.
The first time I budgeted for new drills, I excluded Mobilaris because I thought it came with the machine. It didn't. Adding it post-purchase was more expensive and required retrofitting.
Now I treat digital tooling as a separate line item. Ask: "Is the automation/WiFi/Mobilaris package included in the base price or add-on?" The answer changes the total cost of ownership.
Speaking of budgeting: the next question sounds odd, but it's saved me real money.
8. Is the Epiroc part compatible across machine generations?
Epiroc has updated several flagship products over the past decade—for example, the Boomer series for underground drilling evolved from the S1 to the M and L series. I once ordered a replacement drifter from an inventory list that listed compatibility with "Boomer models." Didn't specify generation. The part fit the physical mount, but the control system interface was different.
Cost of that mistake: $1,200 restocking fee plus a 10-day halt on that drifter rebuild.
Now I ask: "What's the serial number range this part is certified for?" If the sales rep can't answer, I ask for the engineering compatibility matrix. It exists. They have it. But you have to ask.
The list questions up front are: correct generation, correct automation tier, correct facility scope, correct dividend cycle, and correct contract escalation. I learned all of them by making the mistake first.
