If you're adding to an existing fleet, the first question isn't 'Which jumbo is fastest?' It's 'What spare parts and operator skills do I already have?' I've watched a mine choose a jumbo that was 5% slower on paper because it shared the same control platform as their other eight rigs. Service techs could move between machines without retraining, and the spare parts inventory stayed simple. That 5% speed loss disappeared in the first month of uptime gain.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

If you're still not sure, work through these questions:

  1. How many development meters do you need in the next 12 months? Under 800 m? Treat it like Scenario A. 1,500 m or more? Look seriously at the T50. Already operating multiple jumbos? Scenario C.
  2. Do you have electric-hydraulic maintenance skills? If not, a simpler mechanical rig or a fully supported service package is better than a technically advanced machine with nobody to maintain it.
  3. Can your support truck get to the face? This sounds too small to matter, but I've seen a $900,000 jumbo wait three hours because the Ford support truck had a flat tire and nobody had checked the spare. Tires and site access are part of the drilling system.
  4. What does the quote actually include? Ask what's NOT included. If the answer contains 'miscellaneous' or 'to be confirmed,' that's a red flag.
  5. Can you get a laser alignment report? A jumbo Epiroc is only as good as its feed alignment. Ask for the calibration certificate, ideally traceable to an ISO 17025-accredited lab.

The Bottom Line

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. A used jumbo can outperform a new T50 if the site isn't ready for it. The T50 is a serious production tool, but only when the operation around it is ready. And no matter which scenario you're in, demand a transparent quote. The right machine with the right support is the real upgrade—not the biggest spec sheet.
