The practical thing most buyers miss is that the RCS platform gives you a path to automation that doesn't require ripping out everything you own tomorrow.

The way our operations evolved (and I've seen this pattern with other early adopters):
Year 1: You buy one or two machines with RCS. Operators learn the interface. You monitor performance from the office—actual shift data, not guesswork.
Year 2: You add more RCS-compatible machines. Your maintenance team can pull diagnostics remotely. You stop sending a guy down a shaft to check a code.
Year 3: You start integrating Mobilaris or third-party fleet management. You're not fully autonomous, but you've got data to prove where inefficiencies live. You can simulate changes before buying more equipment.

Does every site need this? No. If you're running a single open pit with 3-year-old machines and no plans to expand, a used competitor's drill with a good service history might be fine. But if you're building for 10 years? The fragmentation will eat you alive. I've seen operations with 6 different control systems—the maintenance supervisor literally kept three laptops in his truck just to log into different machines. That's not efficiency. It's chaos.

The biggest misconception buyers have is that automation means 'the machine runs itself.' It doesn't. It means you get better data to make decisions. The Epiroc RCS platform is essentially a data backbone that lets you tie disparate machines together. But if you only buy one, you don't realize the benefit—it's a network effect.

The Numbers That Matter (and the Ones That Don't)

When I'm evaluating a new piece of gear now—whether it's a hydraulic rock breaker (HB series) or a mine truck (MT54, ST2G)—my checklist looks different:

The machine is just a chassis for the software.
